モデル概要
1959年から1971年まで生産された通称”フィンテール”と呼ばれるW111/W112型には、セダン、クーペ、コンバーチブルと3つのボディ形状がある。デビュー当初はセダン、1961年にクーペ、カブリオレの順にラインナップを追加。ひと目見てメルセデス・ベンツと分かる1910年から採用されるV字型ラジエータを形どる象徴的なフロントグリルは横方向に拡大され、戦後の混迷期から新時代へと向かうターニングポイントとなったモデルだ。デザイナーはフランス人のポール・ブラック。同国のデザイナーでドライエやブガッティを手掛けたことで知られるフィリップ・シャルボノーに従事してカーデザインを学んだ。クーペのエクステリアデザインの見どころは、なんといってもルーフラインの美しさだ。リアガラスの曲げ加工技術と相まってフィンテールを際立たせる。一方、インテリアはメータークラスターまでリアルウッドを用いた。分厚くバネが効いたシートも高級家具の仕上がり。W111/W112型はラストハンドメイドと呼ばれるだけあり、どこをとっても手工芸品の様相で魅了される。2.5L直列6気筒エンジンを搭載した250SEクーペは、1965年から1967年までの3年間生産された。

個体概要
日本でもそうそうお目にかかることのないウエスタン自動車が輸入した個体で、とあるコレクターから5年越しの交渉の末に譲り受けた希少な正規ディーラー車である。新規登録から一度使用停止にしているため、正確な履歴をたどることはできないが1967年といえば$1が¥360の時代。相応の方が初代オーナーと推察できるだろう。当個体はシャシーとエンジンナンバーは適合するが元色はアイボリー。現在のボディカラーは濃い紫に、恐らくマイカをブレンドしたいわゆるメタリック塗装をボディに施し上品な2トーンに仕上げられている。W111型には当初2.2リッターの直6エンジンを搭載していたが、後に排気量を2.5Lに拡大。自社製4速オートマチックトランスミッションを介するには十分なトルクを発生する。屋内保管のコレクションカーとうこともあり、日常使い可能な機関系のコンディションだったそうだが、ヴィンテージ湘南では先々を考慮して電装系や足回りをリフレッシュ。燃料系はラインをやり直し燃料タンクは新品に交換済み。インテリアの状態も申し分なく、特にリペアが必要な箇所を見受けることはできなかった。

About this model
Nicknamed ”the Fin Tail” and produced from 1958 to 1971, the W111/W112 came in three different bodies: sedan, coupe and convertible. The debut vehicle was the sedan. In 1961, the coupe and then the cabriolet were added to the lineup. The symbolic front grill, modeled on the V-shaped radiator used since 1910 and recognizable at a glance as Mercedes-Benz, was expanded sideways. This model marked a turning point for the company from the postwar depression to a new era.The designer was Frenchman Paul Bracq. He studied car design under Phillippe Charbonneaux, a fellow French designer known for his work with Delahaye and Bugatti.The piece de resistance of the coupe’s exterior design is the beauty of the roof line, which, coupled with the processing technology of the curved rear glass, brings out the fin tails. On the interior, wood is used for even the dashboard. The seats, with their thick springs, are crafted like high-end furniture. The W111/W112 have been called the last handmade cars, and true to that description, they are brimming with handmade craftsmanship. The 250SE coupe, with a 2.5L straight-6 engine, was produced for three years, from 1965 through 1967.

About this vehicle
It is very rare to see a vehicle that was imported by official dealer Western Automobile like this one was. Vintage Shonan later acquired it from a certain collector after five years of negotiation. After its initial registration in Japan, it was not used for a period of time, so it is not possible to trace its precise history, but in 1967, a dollar was worth 360 yen, so it is probably safe to assume that the original owner was a person of means. The chassis and engine number match, but the original color was ivory. The body color now is deep purple, a metallic paint job probably blended with micah and given with a classy two-tone finish.The W111 originally had a 2.2L straight-6 engine but its displacement was later expanded 2.5L. With the company’s 4-speed automatic transmission, this provides plenty of torque. It would make a suitable collector’s item to be stored inside, but since the engine system was in a good enough condition for daily use, Vintage Shonan redid the wiring and suspension for future use. As for the fuel system, the line was redone and the tank replaced with a new one. The interior is in satisfactory condition, with nothing that looks particularly in need of repair.
